The Lemosho Route

Phase 1: The Rainforest & The Plateau (Days 1–3)

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (2,650m)

Experience: A short 3–4 hour hike through dense, humid rainforest. Explanation: You begin at the remote western gate. This day is a gentle introduction to "pole pole" (slowly, slowly) trekking. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys in the canopy.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)

Experience: A steady climb out of the forest into the moorland zone. Explanation: The trail gets steeper as you reach the edge of the Shira Plateau. You'll notice the trees thinning out and being replaced by giant heather and lobelias.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

Experience: A relatively flat, scenic trek across the high-altitude plateau. Explanation: This is a "buffer" day. Walking across the plateau helps your body adjust to the 3,500m+ range without a massive vertical gain.

Day 4: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Experience: A long, tough day climbing up to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch before descending. Explanation: This is the most critical day for success. By touching 4,600m and then descending to sleep at 3,960m, you trigger your blood to produce more oxygen-carrying cells. This "yo-yo" effect is the secret to beating altitude sickness.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Experience: Scrambling up the Barranco Wall. Explanation: Don't let the "Wall" scare you; it’s a fun, non-technical scramble that requires using your hands for balance. It leads to incredible views of the Heim Glacier. This is a short day to allow for recovery.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Experience: Trekking through the bleak, lunar-like Alpine Desert to "Base Camp." Explanation: You arrive at Barafu (the Swahili word for "Ice") by mid-afternoon. The goal is to eat an early dinner and sleep immediately, as your summit attempt begins at midnight.

Day 7: Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) then down to Mweka (3,100m)

Experience: The midnight push. 6–8 hours up, 4–6 hours down. Explanation: This is the ultimate test. You hike through the night in freezing temperatures (-10°C to -20°C) to reach the crater rim (Stella Point) by sunrise. After a final push to Uhuru Peak, you descend rapidly to escape the thin air.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

A final descent through the forest leads back to the park exit, where successful climbers receive their certificates. Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m Distance: ~10km
