The Machame Route

The Machame Route, often called the "Whiskey Route," is a popular and scenic path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

It is typically completed in 6 or 7 days, with the 7-day option offering better altitude acclimatization.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

The journey begins at the Machame Gate - Mount Kilimanjaro, where you'll complete park formalities before starting your trek through a lush, montane rainforest.

Elevation: 1,800m to 2,835m

Distance: ~11km

Atmosphere: Often misty and humid with sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

The trail leaves the forest and climbs onto the Shira Plateau, offering your first clear views of Kibo peak.

Elevation: 2,835m to 3,850m

Distance: ~5km

Highlights: Crossing a steep rocky ridge and traversing open moorlands.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

This is a crucial acclimatization day. You will climb high to the Lava Tower Camp for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp to sleep.

Elevation: 3,850m to 4,600m (Lava Tower) then down to 3,900m

Distance: ~10km

Key Feature: Passing through the "Garden of Senecios," filled with unique giant groundsels.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

You’ll start the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall—a steep but non-technical scramble—before crossing several ridges and valleys.

Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m

Distance: ~5km

Highlights: Spectacular views of the Heim Glacier and the satisfaction of reaching the top of the wall.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

A steady climb through a sub-alpine desert landscape leads you to the base of the summit cone. This afternoon is dedicated to resting and preparing for the midnight summit push.

Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m

Distance: ~4km

Vibe: Stark, windy, and desolate, with a focused "base camp" energy.

Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

The most challenging day starts around midnight. You'll reach Stella Point at dawn and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) then down to 3,100m

Distance: ~15km

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

A final descent through the forest leads back to the park exit, where successful climbers receive their certificates.

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m

Distance: ~10km

Why Choose Machame?

Success Rate: The 7-day version is very high-percentage.

Scenery: You see the "Southern Circuit," including the glaciers, the wall, and the plateau.

Challenge: It is tougher than Marangu but more rewarding for fit hikers.
